February 7, 1929 – March 28, 2018
Louise Frieda (Steenbeke) Rucano, 89 answered God’s call to heaven at the Hearth at Juday Creek on Wednesday, at 6:50 am.
Louise was born in South Bend to the late Julius and Marie (DeFreeuw) Steenbeke on February 7, 1929. On September 28, 1946, in South Bend’s Sacred Heart Belgian Catholic Church, she married the love of her life John Rucano, Sr. who passed away on September 18, 2011.
Louise and John had a very active life with many organizations, church related activities and fundraisers. She was also a faithful member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Louise was highly respected for her faithful service to her employer and customers at McKinley Pharmacy for over 30 years. She was a devoted caregiver to her family members and always willing to support charitable organizations. She was a cat lover and enjoyed watching the birds at her feeders. She was the hostess with the mostest as she always gathered the family around her table, but she was best known for her cooking skills, especially for her family secret lasagna recipe. We will all miss her greatly.
Louise and John were blessed with three children, John (Justine) Rucano, Jr. of South Bend, Eileen Rucano of Fairborn, OH and Rozanne Rucano of South Bend. Also left to cherish her memory are five grandchildren, Keith (Carey) Boroczk of West Carrollton, OH, Lisa (Andrew) Brown of Spokane, WA, Andrea (Tim) Whittaker of Indianapolis, IN, Gina (Eric) Nichols of Whitestown, IN, John (Deanna) Rucano, III of South Bend; and six great-grandchildren, Haley and Tyler Nichols, Alyssa and Kaitlyn Brown, Gianna and Celine Rucano. She is also survived by brothers, Allen Steenbeke, Mark (Becky) Steenbeke; and sister, Donna Reimer who faithfully visited her from Fishers, IN. Louise was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother David Steenbeke, and daughter-in-law Cheryl Rucano.
The family would like to thank Louise’s caregivers and the entire staff of the
Hearth at Juday Creek, especially Ashley, Alyssa, Amanda, and Lynn for their compassionate care.
Louise had been one of the first residents at Wellbrooke of South Bend. The family would also like to thank all the staff, especially Bernadette, Carol, CeCe, Kim, and Pat for their care and concern of Louise’s well-being.
Friends may call from 3-7pm Monday at the McGann Hay Funeral Homes, University Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Rd., near Ironwood and one hour before Mass (12:30-1:30pm Tuesday) in the church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 1:30pm at Corpus Christ Church with Rev. Daryl Rybicki, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery.
