MISHAWAKA – Helen Marie Wise, 99 went home to the Lord on June 9, 2018. She was born in Mishawaka, Indiana on August 18, 1918 to the late Blaze and Antonia Macuszonok. She formerly resided in Nappanee, IN and Sarasota, FL. On October 13, 1943, Helen married Paul Wise, who preceded her in death.
From their beautiful marriage, they were blessed with two daughters: Christine (Allan) Wood of Darien IL , and Shirley Wise of Mishawaka, IN. Also surviving her, a sister, Joan Wrobleski of MI; two grandsons: Philip (Krista) Wood of Ohio, and Ben (Julie) Wood of IL; and four great-grandchildren: Connor, Baden, Carter, and Mallory. Preceding Helen in death were five siblings: Stella Jankowski, and Joseph, John, Edward and Lawrence Macuszonok.
Helen was devoted to her family and very involved in their lives. She found so much joy being around her entire family. She had a strong faith in God and was a determined lady in everything she did. She always had a smile on her face and would often cheer others up without even knowing it. Helen and Paul met at Notre Dame when he was stationed there during WW II with the Navy. They lived in numerous states in the early years of their marriage, including, California, Florida, Pennsylvania, and ending in Indiana. Since the fall of 2016 Helen resided at Sanctuary at Holy Cross and made lasting friendships with staff and residents. Helen participated in various activities including bingo, crafts, exercise, chapel, and field trips. Helen worked as a bookkeeper for Rainbow Trucking in South Bend, Ball Band in Mishawaka, and Wise Furniture, the family business in Nappanee.
She leaves a great legacy to her family and she will be dearly missed. A memorial service to celebrate Helen’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 30th, with visitation one hour prior, at Evangel Heights United Methodist Church, 114 N. Ironwood Dr., South Bend, IN 46615. Rev. Dr. Patrick Somers, Senior Pastor and Fr. Jim Bracke, C.S.C., will be officiating.
