Frank Byrne Flynn, Age 95, formerly of Monterey St., St. Joseph, MO; died on April 12th at Hospice House, South Bend, IN shortly after midnight. He was born in St. Joseph, Missouri to Dorothy L. Byrne and Frank J. Flynn.
A life-long member of the St. Joseph Co-Cathedral Church, Frank attended the parish school and graduated from Christian Brothers High School in 1939. Frank was active in scouting and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in 1938 and was an active camper including Philmont – the scouting camp in New Mexico. He attended the University of Notre Dame from 1939 – 1941 and Drury College in Springfield, MO in 1941 – 42 where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. In October 1942, when World War II interrupted his college career, Frank enlisted in the Air Force, joining the Meteorological 12th Weather Squadron. He received training in Grand Rapids, MI and Madras, OR before being stationed overseas at a weather station in Foggia, Italy, where he plotted local weather maps for bomber pilots. In December, 1944 he returned to the States and lived in the barracks at Rosecrans Field in St. Joseph, MO until his honorable discharge as a 1st Lieutenant in the fall of 1945.
Frank received a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Drury College in 1946 and then joined Missouri Water and Steam Supply Co., his father’s wholesale plumbing and heating supply business on S. 6th Street in St. Joseph. He served as it’s president for many years, retiring at age 72 in 1991. On March 2, 1957 Frank married the former Gladys Lorene Day Gallu at St. Joseph’s Cathedral Church. A widow at the time of their marriage, Gladys had two daughters and a son: Bonnie, Beverly, and George. Frank enjoyed woodworking and photography. For many years, Frank and Gladys lived along the Missouri River where Frank loved to go fishing. Gladys died on January 28, 1995. Frank stayed in St. Joseph for ten more years before deciding to move to South Bend, Indiana to be nearer his sister, Alice F. Osberger in South Bend, and his brother, Robert H. Flynn in Crown Point, Indiana. From 2005 to 2011, he lived with Alice at her home on South St. Due to health reasons he then resided in several retirement communities, including Tanglewood Trace and the Milton Home. In 2016, Frank moved to The Caring Cottage where he was well cared for and to whom the family is most appreciative. Frank enjoyed working out of doors on the yard and garden. His sense of humor always kept friends and family laughing. Frank was loved and will be dearly missed.
He is survived by his brother, Robert H. Flynn of Crown Point, IN, and eleven nieces and nephews (including Daniel (Mary Jean) and Julia Osberger of South Bend and by Daniel Flynn (Kim Cluck) to whom he was a cherished mentor). Frank is also survived by one of his step-children, Bonnie Bennett Price, Springfield, MO. and by nine step-grandchildren (including Susan Bennett Burton (Kenny) of Franklin, KS and Shelley Slifer (Matt) of Springfield, MO) and fifteen step-great grandchildren. Two step-children predeceased him, George S. Gallu, Norfolk, NE and Beverly Trotter of St. Joseph, MO.
Funeral arrangements made by McGann Funeral Home – South Bend, IN. A memorial Mass will be held at 2pm on Saturday, May 6th at St. Anthony de Padua Church, South Bend with visitation in the church at 1pm. Memorial contributions for Frank B. Flynn may be made to Boy Scouts – Camp Geiger, 1704 Buckingham St., St. Joseph, MO 64506.
