Professor Edward Vasta, Ph.D., 89, passed away peacefully March 20, 2017.
Edward was born January 18, 1928 in Forest Park, IL to the late Joseph and Josephine (Mallimaci) Vasta.
On November 28, 1953, Edward married the love of his life, Geraldine Stocco. She survives along with their six children, John (Jane) Vasta of Harvard, MA, Paula (Al) Stevens of Walkerton, IN and Joseph (Tamara) Vasta, Catherine Robinson, Barbara (Wayne) Kampa, and Salvatore Vasta, all of South Bend; one sister; three brothers; 19 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Edward was a Professor of Medieval Literature at the University of Notre Dame for over 40 years. A very educated man, he obtained his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame, Master’s degree from the University of Michigan, and his Ph.D. from Stanford University. He was a National Endowment for the Arts Fellow; and published scholarly books, articles, literary novels, and short stories. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy as an ETM3 from 1946-1948. He was a devoted husband and father, and many will dearly miss him.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, at 1PM, with visitation one hour prior, at the McGann Hay, University Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Rd., South Bend, with Rev. Edward Malloy, C.S.C., officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made, in Edward’s name, payable to the University of Notre Dame, and mailed to Jamery S. Barry; Assistant Director, Development Donor Services; University of Notre Dame; 1100 Grace Hall; Notre Dame, IN 46556. Donations will be used for the Department of English.
